Overall, Gartner reports worldwide vendor revenues for the NAS /unified storage market increased 32.5% in 2011 compared with 2010, reaching $6.8 billion. The estimated pure NAS market grew 21.5% to $4.5 billion. The report also cites block storage vendors adding NAS capabilities to their SAN storage arrays with a unified management interface as a key growth driver for this market.

Additionally, the report discusses the hard-disk drive (HDD) shortage due to flooding in Thailand in October 2011. The report points to the significant impact on the low-end NAS market, noting that EMC is the only top-tier storage system vendor in the market. Other vendors were adversely affected due to their disk drive sales volumes being too low to form a strategic relationship with HDD suppliers, and low-end drives being more severely impacted by the flood than midrange or high-end drives.

Globe Telecom has formally filed a complaint with the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) against the use of illegal repeaters as part of its intensified efforts to track down users and sellers of the equipment that cause network interference for subscribers in a specific area.

Illegal repeaters come in the form of indoor or outdoor antennas and wireless adapters that boost network coverage and signal by means of hogging bandwidth from a legitimate Globe network infrastructure. They are installed in between trees, building windows, toilet areas, rooftop areas and building spaces, making them increasingly hard to locate. As a result, Globe subscribers experience dropped calls as well as a significant dip in call quality and clarity.

Monitoring reports from Globe Network Group revealed that there was a significant increase in interference cases in the National Capital Region, specifically in Makati over the last 3 months, with over 80 sites affected.

Taking a proactive stance to combat the growing number of cases that involve the use of illegal repeaters, Globe and NTC started to conduct a joint ocular inspection in February this year to confiscate illegally-installed repeaters and clamp down on sellers of illegal repeaters, including online retailers of these devices. To showcase the serious implications of the illegal practice, NTC issued a show cause order this month to an owner of an illegal repeater in San Andres, Manila.

“Network and clean frequencies are important components for quality delivery of our services. The use of illegal repeaters in order to get good network coverage at the expense of others has no place in this society. It’s a totally unfair practice especially as it impacts a great majority of subscribers in an identified area,” said Atty. Froilan M. Castelo, Head for Corporate and Legal Services at Globe. “With our strengthened partnerships with the police, courts, and other government institutions like the NTC, Globe will remain relentless in going after and prosecuting perpetrators, both users and sellers, to ensure a stable, consistent, and reliable network for Globe subscribers nationwide.”

Globe earlier announced that it is in the thick of a massive $700-million landmark mobile network modernization program that will increase its 2G/3G coverage significantly, enable faster call and data connections, on-time delivery of text messages, and reduced incidence of dropped calls even at peak hours and traffic-heavy occasions. HP announced Virtual Application Networks, a new cloud functionality that speeds application deployment, simplifies management and ensures network service level agreements (SLAs) in cloud and other dynamic computing models across the HP FlexNetwork architecture.

Virtual Application Networks provide a virtualized view of a network- abstracted from the physical equipment- that transforms a rigid physical enterprise network into a programmable, multitenant and application-aware virtual network. Virtual Application Networks use templates to characterize application-delivery requirements and ensure optimal application performance and reliability. This enables IT staff to deploy new cloud applications to users in minutes rather than weeks and ensure SLAs are consistently met by using templates to automate network orchestration.

“In the cloud era, clients need to be able to deploy applications on the fly to any device and any user accessing the network from anywhere with guaranteed quality of service levels,” said Kash Shaikh, Director, Global Product Marketing, HP Networking. “Today, only HP is positioned to provide clients with a completely virtualized network from the data center to the end user, managed by a single platform that is capable of deploying new applications within minutes.”

Virtual Application Networks tap into the intelligence of server, storage and network hardware to automate provisioning and configuration tasks, while optimizing performance. Virtual Application Networks actively leverage elements of Software Defined Networking (SDN) technologies, including OpenFlow, which is available on multiple HP Networking switch families that were pioneered by HP with key industry partners.

Enterprise applications and services are increasingly being delivered from the cloud, and network plays a critical role. The consumption of media-rich content and explosion of virtualized applications have increased the demands on enterprise networks. HP’s Virtual Application Network strategy is a good example of path forward for enterprises seeking to embrace the cloud computing paradigm.

HP also expands Virtual Application Networks with solutions that simplify mobile device access, automate secure site-to-site connectivity and improve rich media application performance. The new offerings include modules for HP Intelligent Management Center (IMC), to simplify on-boarding, provisioning and monitoring of employee-owned devices across wired and wireless networks.

The new HP Dynamic Virtual Private Network (DVPN) enables the automation of secure network connectivity to any location. The company also introduced a high-performing HP 10500 campus core switch that delivers industry-leading throughput for rich media applications.

“HP’s Virtual Application Networks solutions ensure that our clients are able to transform their networks to securely embrace the demands of new devices and rich applications with a unified approached,” Shaikh said.

Last May 9, 2012, I was invited by HP Philippines to attend their Global Influencer Summit 2012 conference in Shanghai, China. I don’t normally say yes to this kind of invitation but I decided to attend this event for I feel I’ve missed a lot of opportunities covering events abroad.

The event started with a lion dance signifying prosperity and goodluck. Steve Hoffman, HP Director of Worldwide Marketing delivered the opening remarks. Steve gave the audience a glimpse of what HP has to offer in terms of products, strategies and trends, particularly in the area of consumerization of I.T. or CoIT. A term I rarely hear from other technology companies.

Consumerization is a term used to describe the growing tendency for new information technology to emerge first in the consumer market and then spread into business. The emergence of consumer markets as the primary driver of information technology innovation is seen as a major IT industry shift, as large businesses dominated the early decades of computer usage and development. IT consumerization is about a shift in technology from business-centric solutions to end user or consumer centric solutions. It means that companies developing and selling technology are placing more emphasis on the individual users of technology products, rather than creating solutions with big businesses in mind.

During the event, HP paraded 80 new products. Some of which are as follows:

- HP ENVY Spectre XT, an ultramobile premium Ultrabook™ that delivers an overall premium experience with extraordinary design and performance;

- HP ENVY Sleekbooks and HP ENVY Ultrabook systems, providing the ultimate combination of style and substance for entertainment experiences;

- HP EliteBook Folio, built from the ground up to be everything a business Ultrabook should be with security, manageability and reliability;

- HP t410 All-in-One Smart Zero Client, which features single-wire Power over Ethernet;

- HP Z220 Workstations and HP EliteBook Mobile Workstations with professional-class features;

- HP Officejet 150 Mobile All-in-One, the world’s first mobile all-in-one printer, and an ideal companion for business professionals who need a compact, durable solution for printing, scanning and copying while on the go; and

- Four new HP LaserJet printers and an HP Scanjet, providing small and medium businesses and enterprise customers professional-quality documents and fast print speeds, along with the ability to extend the office beyond its physical location.

Later in the afternoon, I attended a couple of breakout sessions showcasing HP solutions. The first session was about ‘Style Meets Function’ where HP executive Stacy Wolf, Vice President, Design, Personal Systems Group gave a presentation on how HP designs their products – notebooks, desktop systems and printers.

The next session is about ‘Thin and Light’, where Aaron Avizu of Intel, explains the pillars of the Ultrabook standards. After which a panel discussion ensued with Kevin Frost, Vice President and General Manager Volume Products, Dan Forlenza, Vice President and General Manager Commercial Managed IT, and Dominic McCarthy, Vice President and General Manager Premium Product, Global Business Unit. During this session, HP announced their latest offering to the market called “Sleekbook”, which I will discussed in my succeeding articles.

The last session for the day is about ‘Tools of the Trade’ where Jim Zafarana, Vice President & General Manager, Commercial Solutions Business Unit of HP showcased the HP Z1 workstation. Ryan Friedlinghaus, CEO, West Coast Customs was also there to demonstrate how HP devices are used into the entire process of car customization which his business is into. I happen to win a shirt from Ryan during this session.

The 2nd day of the event, more breakout sessions were prepared for the media. The first being “All in One’ where Stacey Wolf paraded HPs technology from the past, present and the future. He was joined by Ms. Anya Ayoung-Chee, Miss Universe 2008 and Project Runway winner. The second session is about ‘World Without Print’ where photographer and visual artist Mr. Chase Jarvis showed the importance of print technology in our daily lives. The third and last session for the day ‘Quality and Reliability’, HP paraded their testing labs to explain the rigourous testing procedures each and every HP products went through.

We were all surprised when Todd Bradley, executive vice president of HP’s Personal Systems Group introduced to media the special guest of the day – Ms. Meg Whitman, President and Chief Executive Officer of HP. Whitman reiterated HP’s focus in its continuing effort to produce new and innovating products in the area of servers and storage and networking, investing in software, cloud computing, security and information management.

Whitman also discussed the streamlining of HP’s business processes particularly the restructuring of HP Personal Systems Group (PSG) and HP Imaging and Printing Group (IPG). I will talk about this lengthily since I had the privileged to talk to Meg Whitman the next day after the event. I should say this is the highlight of my trip.

Overall, the trip was all worth it. Not only was I exposed to the latest innovation and trends of HP technology, I also get to speak to Meg Whitman and most of all, I get to meet a lot of media personalities from all over the world. I learned about their culture and I gained new friends as well. Looking forward to my next trip.
